computer magnifying glassLet's face it when we think about finding something on the web we think of Google. As of July 2012, Google search is by far the most widely used search engine with more than 900 million unique monthly visitors (the next closest is Bing with only 165 million).

So, as an individual, business or organization that wants to be found on the internet, what are some of the basic 'Do's and Don'ts' of placing yourself higher in Google's search results? Let's take a quick look at what Google recommends...

 The Do's

  • Make a site with a clear hierarchy and text links. Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link.
  • Keep the links on a given page to a reasonable number.
  • Create a useful, information-rich site, and write pages that clearly and accurately describe your content. Provide unique and relevant content that gives users a reason to visit your site first.
  • Think about the words users would type to find your pages, and make sure that your site actually includes those words within it.
  • Make sure that your <title> elements and ALT attributes are descriptive and accurate.
  • Check for broken links and correct HTML.
  • Test your site to make sure that it appears correctly in different browsers.
  • Monitor your site's performance and optimize load times. Fast sites increase user satisfaction and improve the overall quality of the web.
  • Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines. Don't deceive your users or present different content to search engines than you display to users, which is commonly referred to as "cloaking."
  • Avoid tricks intended to improve search engine rankings. A good rule of thumb is whether you'd feel comfortable explaining what you've done to a website that competes with you. Another useful test is to ask, "Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn't exist?"

The Don'ts

  • Avoid hidden text or hidden links.
  • Don't use cloaking or sneaky redirects.
  • Don't load pages with irrelevant keywords.
  • Don't create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content.
  • Avoid "doorway" pages created just for search engines, or other "cookie cutter" approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content.

Fusegarden's work on our website went beyond our expectations. Their suggestions to creatively expand it's scope and capabilities were very helpful. They demonstrated a clear knowledge of the various programs available and a skill in their applications. We found them easily accessible throughout the entire process. Once our site was up and running, Kevin (owner) continued to make suggestions that improved its efficiency and simplicity. We recommend Fusegarden's work without hesitation.

Not only was Fusegarden's designs and attention to detail superior (actually it rocked!), but their ability to work within the short timeframe was impressive. And it gets better, Kevin (owner) was a complete delight to work with because he was kind, communicated on the progress of each project, and extremely flexible to provide what was needed. I was so impressed with his knowledge, work ethic, and design that I immediately found another project for him to work on.

I am very pleased with my experience working with Kevin from Fusegarden Design Studio! He was very professional and easy to work with on the project. He was extremely efficient, delivering a high quality video to me several days sooner than expected. He listened to my requests associated with the project and met all of them. I would recommend him and his company to my closest friends, being assured they would be pleased with the experience!
